The Saturday Nobody Wants
Here's how the do-it-yourself dump run usually goes.
You rent a truck or borrow one from a friend who now expects a favor. You spend the morning wrestling a couch, an old fridge, and a dozen bags into the bed. You try to strap it all down and hope nothing blows out on the highway. You drive to the landfill or transfer station, if you're lucky enough to be there during open hours. Then you sit in line behind a dozen other trucks. The smell hits you before you even reach the scale. You pay at the gate, follow directions to the tipping area, and unload everything by hand in the heat, surrounded by flies, mud, and the occasional seagull. Then you drive back, clean out the truck, return it, and ice your back.
There's a reason nobody describes this as a fun weekend.
The Real Cost of DIY Junk Hauling
People choose DIY because it seems cheaper. Let's add it up honestly:
Truck or Trailer Rental
Unless you own a full-size truck, you'll need to rent one. Rental fees are usually charged per hour or per day, plus mileage, plus insurance if you want it.
Fuel
Rental trucks aren't known for gas mileage, and landfills and transfer stations aren't always close to home.
Landfill and Transfer Station Fees
Disposal sites charge fees, often by weight or load size. Some items, like tires, mattresses, and appliances, may have extra charges. Some materials may not be accepted at all.
Your Time
Loading, driving, waiting, unloading, and returning the truck can easily eat half a day or more. If there's too much for one trip, double it.
Help
Moving heavy items safely takes at least two people. That means pizza, beer, and an IOU for your friend's next move.
Risk of Injury
Back strains, pinched fingers, dropped appliances, and falls on stairs are real risks. A doctor's visit or a week of back pain wipes out any savings.
Risk of Damage
Scuffed walls, scratched floors, and dented door frames are much more likely without experienced carriers. So is damage to the rental truck.
Unsecured Load Risk
Items that fly out of a truck bed are dangerous to other drivers. Unsecured loads can also lead to fines.
Side by Side
DIY: truck rental, fuel, disposal fees, half a day or more, a helper, injury risk, damage risk, and you sort out the disposal rules yourself.
Hiring Red Top Scoopers: one upfront price that already includes labor, transport, and disposal. Our crew does the lifting, often within an hour or two. We're licensed and insured, we donate and recycle whenever possible, and you never set foot in a landfill.
For a single bag of trash, DIY makes sense. For furniture, appliances, cleanouts, and anything heavy, the gap closes fast. Once you count your time and your back, hiring a crew often comes out ahead.
What Landfills Won't Take Anyway
Many people load up a truck only to be turned away at the gate. Landfills and transfer stations commonly restrict or refuse:
- Paint, chemicals, and other hazardous waste
- Tires (or accept them only for a fee)
- Appliances containing refrigerant, unless handled properly
- Electronics, at some facilities
- Yard waste mixed with regular trash
When you hire us, we sort out where everything needs to go. See what we can't take for the short list of truly hazardous items.
The Environmental Angle
A DIY dump run usually sends everything to the landfill, including items that could have been donated or recycled. When we haul your junk, usable items are set aside for donation and recycling whenever possible. Appliances and scrap metal go to recycling instead of being buried.
When DIY Does Make Sense
To be fair, hauling it yourself can make sense if:
- You own a truck and have a strong helper
- It's a small load of light, easy items
- You live close to a disposal site
- You actually enjoy this sort of thing (some people do)
For everyone else, there's us.
